My pavilion will be based in Hyde Park, by the Serpentine Gallery. It has an octagonal shape with entrances by some of the sides. The rest of the vertical sides (supported with metal beams) will be made of interior and exterior mirrors, which will be split into sections, where some of the mirrors will slant outwards, some inwards and a few will be curved to create the effect of distortion. The roof will be constructed of an irregular triangle pattern, encased by glass panes and supported by metal beams, which will give the pavilion light and shadow through the changing pattern of shadows depending on the time of day. There will be a circular seating area in the middle, able to seat multiple people at one time and the floor will be made of a sturdy rubber material.
The themes of the pavilion are reality and distortion, as if you would be sitting inside the building, you would see one side which looks distorted, but right next to it would be one of the entrances (side with no mirrors), representing reality.
What inspired me to come up with this idea was past serpentine pavilions and this importance of shadow and light in architecture, combining it with mirrors and glass.
This looks like such a simple solution, but with great attention to detail, joints, colours and form!
